These photos were taken in Joshua Tree National Park in CA in May 2005 during a heat wave when temperatures reached 102 F in the late afternoons all three days!

Kay Jones > One of numerous blooms on the beaver tail cactus.  It's quite amazing that such a prickly plant could produce such paper tissue delicate flowers!
Kay Jones > I found this beaver tail cactus in full bloom on top of a big rock.
Kay Jones > Joshua trees are giant members of the lily family and look like yucca plants on a tree.  Most had already bloomed by the time we arrived in mid-May.
Kay Jones > Native Americans found the Joshua tree to be a great resource:  leaves were worked into baskets and sandals; flower buds and seeds were eaten.
Kay Jones > Homesteaders used Joshua tree trunks and limbs to build fences and corrals.
Kay Jones > Mormon migrants named the tree after the prophet Joshua seeing the tree limbs outstretched up and westward.
Kay Jones > Joshua trees don't have tree rings.  To determine a tree's age, divide the height of the tree by one-half inch, the average annual growth.
Kay Jones > These may be yucca flowers or palmilla flowers.  This plant provided materials for baskets, sandals, nets, food, and the roots were soaked to make shampoo by Native Americans.
